Fiber Laser Cutting Machine vs Shearing Machine: Which is Better?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The fiber laser cutting machine and the shearing machine each have their own advantages and disadvantages. So, how can we choose the one that maximizes benefits?

1. Cutting Material

A fiber laser cutting machine can cut a wide variety of materials, including metals, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, wood, plastic, and more.

The shearing machine uses high shear force to cut the material in a straight line. The cutting process typically requires materials with a certain level of hardness and shear strength to ensure the cutting tools can effectively penetrate and separate the material. Therefore, a shearing machine is primarily used for cutting metal materials (such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel) and cannot process non-metallic materials.

2. Material Thickness

Fiber laser cutting machines maximize cost-efficiency when processing thin plates (1-3mm). For very thick materials (e.g., steel plates over 20mm thick), the cutting efficiency and precision of a laser cutting machine decrease, and the costs are higher.

The shearing machine is faster than the laser cutting machine when performing straight-line cuts. The cutting process of the shearing machine typically requires materials with a certain level of hardness and shear strength. When processing metal materials within a thickness range of 0.2-30mm, the actual cutting results show that the thicker the material, the faster the cutting speed. For thin plates, the cutting efficiency is 5-10 times that of a laser cutting machine. Additionally, the shearing machine offers high precision, minimal stress, and high accuracy for subsequent bending. In contrast, after cutting with a laser cutting machine, there may be errors when moving to the bending machine, typically within a 10mm tolerance.

3. Cutting Shape

Fiber laser cutting machines can easily cut any complex or irregular shapes, making them suitable for creating custom, intricate parts, especially when complex geometric designs are needed.

A shearing machine, however, is limited to straight-line cuts and cannot cut complex shapes or curves, making its precision lower than that of a laser cutting machine. It is more suitable for high-volume straight-line cutting.

4. Cutting Precision

Fiber laser cutting machines offer extremely high cutting precision, and the cut edges are typically very smooth with a small heat-affected zone. This makes them ideal for high-precision and complex shape processing.

Shearing machines, however, do not offer the same level of precision as laser cutting machines. They are better suited for high-volume straight-line cutting.

5. Cost

Shearing machines are much cheaper—usually, 3-5 shearing machines are required to equal the cost of one laser cutting machine. However, the operational costs of a laser cutting machine are higher.

Primapress High-Precision Shearing Machine

The Primapress high-precision shearing machine has an accuracy range of 0.03mm/m, and laser stitch welding requires a tolerance of no more than 0.1mm. The material cut by the Primapress shearing machine meets the stringent straightness requirements for laser stitch welding. Ordinary shearing machines cannot meet these high precision standards. With a single-sided cutting tolerance of only 0.03mm, the Primapress far exceeds the requirements of laser stitch welding. As a result, it has become a high-quality precision cutting supplier for laser no-filler stitch welding in automotive sheet metal.
