Effective Strategies for Improving CNC Turret Punch Press Operations and Preventing Material Sticking and Deformation

1. Methods for eliminating and reducing sticking materials

Due to the pressure and heat generated during CNC punching, small particles of the sheet metal will adhere to the surface of the punch, resulting in poor punching quality. To remove the adhesive material, a fine oilstone can be used for polishing, and the polishing direction should be the same as the direction of the punch movement, so as to avoid further adhesive material after polishing. Do not use coarse gauze or other materials for polishing, as the surface of the punch may become rougher and more prone to sticking. Reasonable mold clearance, good stamping process, and necessary lubrication of the sheet metal will all reduce the generation of sticking material. To prevent overheating, lubrication is generally used to reduce friction. If lubrication is not possible or waste rebound occurs, the following methods can be taken:

Alternating the use of multiple punch heads of the same size can provide a longer cooling time before being reused. Stop using the overheated mold. By programming to control the mold change, interrupt its long-term repetitive work or reduce its stamping frequency.

2、 Measures to prevent deformation of sheet metal when punching many holes

If many holes are punched on a board, the board cannot remain flat due to the accumulation of punching shear stress. During each punching process, the material around the hole deforms downwards, causing tensile stress on the upper surface of the sheet metal and compressive stress on the lower surface. For a small number of punches, the effect is not significant, but as the number of punches increases, tensile and compressive stresses accumulate at some point until the material deforms.

One method to eliminate such deformation is to first punch every other hole, and then return to punching the remaining holes. Although this will also generate stress, it alleviates the accumulation of stress during sequential stamping in the same direction, and also cancels out the stress of the two groups of holes before and after, thereby preventing deformation of the sheet metal.

3、 Try to avoid cutting narrow strips as much as possible

When the CNC punch die is used to cut sheet metal with a width smaller than the thickness of the sheet metal, the punch head will bend and deform due to lateral force, causing the gap on one side to be too small or wear to intensify. In severe cases, it will scratch the lower die, causing both the upper and lower dies to be damaged.

It is recommended not to use narrow strip boards with a width less than 2.5 times the thickness of the board. When cutting narrow strips, the sheet metal tends to bend into the opening of the lower die instead of being completely cut off, and may even wedge into the side of the punching die. If the above situation cannot be avoided, it is recommended to use a fully guided mold with a return plate to support the punch.
